It’s been over two years since celebrated international designer John Galliano lost his job at Dior for hurling anti-Semitic abuses in a Paris restaurant, but his ordeal is not over.

A group of students recently started a petition objecting the designer’s appointment at New York’s top

fashion college, Parsons? The New School of Design, to take a three-day master class. Hundreds of students signed the petition at change.org, a web platform, saying, “It is disgraceful to hire someone who has made such inhumane comments.”

The Indian fashion fraternity, however, says young learning minds should not mix talent with politics, especially at the cost of missing out? education from such a senior designer. “It’s sad that in today’s day and age, all our decisions are shrouded in politics!

Unfortunately, Galliano is as talented as he is a tainted genius, but there is something to be learned from everyone with experience — the students can pick his brains on design and that would be valuable,” says designer Suneet Varma. Veteran designer Ritu Beri agrees.”It’s very sad, and a shame too, that a great talent like him (Galliano) has to face such humiliation,” says Beri.

Fashion Design Council of India president Sunil Sethi feels that it’s silly to hold a life-long grudge against someone for their misbehaviour. “Designers are creative people. They say a lot of things but you cannot punish them their whole life!” Dr Noopur Anand, professor at National Institute of Fashion Design, adds,? “Students should realise that they have a lot to learn from him, and concentrate on his talent instead.”
